Junior Club Championship
19 February 2010
The Junior Squash Championship for 2009 was finally decided in February 2010. They had been delayed due to the recent court repairs and availability of the players to participate.
When the qualifying rounds finally started, the snow came down in lumps andseveral players from outlying locations were unable to make it.
Thanks to David Hahn, the draw was re-organised and qualifying went ahead. It was also made possible to play the semi-finals that same day, just in case the weather worsened later in the week. Thanks to some excellent performances and the 3 game 11 point P A R (point a rally) scoring system, the games really rattled along.
Finals night saw a repeat of last year's final with Alex Cleminson (1) defending his title against Adam Mckay (2). Both boys have been short of match practice recently due to the demands of exam year, but this didn't stop them from giving us a hard fought final. However, Alex cast off his rustiness first to take the first game fairly easily. Then Adam fought back, dug in and secured the second game. Unfortunately, that proved to be his high point. Alex's game improved and Adam gave away too many cheap points with unforced errors and, to make it worse, in positions from where he could have won the game. So Alex reclaimed his title for the second year in succession following in the Cleminson family tradition as older brother Thomas had similarly won back-to-back titles in previous years.

The plate final between Harvey Craven and Andrew Awcock was a very nervous affair. Both began the final with determination. However, the whole match was error-strewn most noticeably with service errors. Nerves became more and more frazzled as the first four games were shared. The fifth game just seemed to increse the nervousness as serve after serve went out of court. Then, finally we saw some competitive rallies. In the end, Harvey triumphed 21-19 in the fifth. On the night, his determination to succeed was slightly stronger than Andrew's.
